Feeding Guide

Newborn Feeding Guide: Breast vs Formula

Whether you choose to breastfeed, formula feed, or combine both, the primary goal is to ensure your baby receives the proper nutrition and hydration they need to grow and thrive.

Feeding Frequency and Volumes

Newborns have very small stomachs and need to be fed frequently. Here is a general guideline for the first few months:

  • First few weeks: Feed on demand every 2 to 3 hours (8-12 times per day).
  • 1 to 2 months: 3 to 4 ounces per feeding, every 3 to 4 hours.
  • 3 to 4 months: 4 to 6 ounces per feeding, every 4 hours.
  • 5 to 6 months: 6 to 8 ounces per feeding, plus introduction of solid foods.

Signs Your Baby is Eating Enough

You can track your baby’s nutritional intake by monitoring their weight gain and diaper output. A well-fed baby typically has 6 or more wet diapers per day and gains weight steadily according to pediatric growth charts.
